
Mr. Hume is a 1974 cum laude graduate of Princeton University and a 1977 graduate of Vanderbilt School of Law. From 1977 to 1995 he practiced with the Louisville law firm of Woodward Hobson & Fulton, where he was a partner, chaired the firm’s hiring committee, and served on the firm’s management committee. Mr. Hume also practiced with the Louisville law firm of Boehl Stopher & Graves from 1995 to 1999 before opening his own office in Louisville in 1999. He joined Thompson Miller & Simpson, PLC in 2004.
Mr. Hume has been lead counsel in numerous jury and bench trials in state and federal courts throughout Kentucky, and handled appeals before the Kentucky Court of Appeals, the Kentucky Supreme Court and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. His practice focus is general civil litigation, with an emphasis on medical and hospital defense, medical peer review litigation, administrative litigation before state agencies such as the Board of Medical Licensure and the Board of Nursing, and insurance defense. He served as president of the Kentucky Defense Counsel, and was Kentucky State membership chair for the International Association of Defense Counsel and the Defense Research Institute, from whom he received the Exceptional Performance Award in 2000. He is a two-term member and past Chairman of Citizens for Better Judges, and a member of the Louisville Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Committee, which oversees the evaluation of all local state and federal judges. He also served on the Kentucky Bar Association House of Delegates and the Louisville Bar Association Board of Directors, and chaired the Louisville Bar Association’s Litigation, Appellate Practice, and Health Law sections. Mr. Hume has taught or is currently teaching a variety of courses and seminars at the University of Louisville (Brandeis) School of Law, including “MEDICAL-PROBLEMS”, “MEDICAL MALPRACTICE”, and “TRIAL PRACTICE”. He has published and lectured extensively in the areas of trial practice, health law, and legal ethics.
